- Invest In A Rugged Cruiser At Bow Cycle And Help HIV/AIDS Healthcare Workers In Africa -

KONAWORLD - Before you can say summertime, it will be here. Long days, short and flip-flop temps and perfect cruiser conditions. Whether you pedal to your 9-5, pedal for fitness, pedal to the store or know someone who likes to pedal and is in serious need a new rig, why not purchase a simple, versatile and well-tailored AfricaBike that not only gets you from point A to B in style, but also assists healthcare workers in Africa treat HIV/AIDS patients.
Pretty practical, no? Yes, and local Kona dealer Bow Cycle has your AfricaBike ready. Every bike enthusiast needs a good cruiser, and this is the ideal opportunity to get one while supporting a humanitarian cause.
So, what’s the deal? Back in 2005, Kona, in partnership with Bicycling magazine and Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Secure the Future Foundation set up the BikeTown Africa project which provides AfricaBikes (along with education and bike maintenance training) to healthcare workers to help them improve the quality of life for those afflicted with HIV/AIDS in sub-SaharanAfrica.
The genuine fact is that it’s amazing what this bike can do for Africa. With transportation for healthcare workers to and from their HIV/AIDS patients being difficult, they were lucky if they supplied treatment to one person a day. Now with the AfricaBike, the workers are able to visit up to eight patients a day and make their rounds more efficiently.
Designed for harsh use in African terrain and conditions, the casual streets and sidewalks of Calgary will be a pleasure cruise for the AfricaBike. Featuring a steel step-through frame, Shimano coaster brakes and Kenda tires with thorn-resistant tubes, the bike also sports a utility rack and basket – perfect for mail, groceries, Big Gulps, water guns or six-packs. The 3.0 version (3-speed with Shimano internal hub shifters) retails for $399 and the 2.0 (1-speed) is $349.
So how can you help? Buy one, and tell a friend. For every two AfricaBikes sold, Kona will donate one to the BikeTown program. In the last three years, Kona has donated roughly 500 bikes and this year will double its contribution by donating 1,000.
To date, the program has stopped in Namibia, Botswana and Senegal. This summer we will travel to Mozambique, Swaziland and twice to South Africa. It’s easy to say the AfricaBike is the most important bike we've ever designed.
