Kelly Does the Prairie Steamer Road Race

Hey Road Fans!

The Prairie Steamer Road Race on Saturday, June 17th was wicked! What a great turnout in terms of participation - almost all categories were full, lot's of racers out enjoying a pretty tough course on the Horse Creek Road just west of Cochrane.

The course featured lots of big rollers and an out-and-back format letting the riders have an idea of places where they could attack or be attacked. Weather was a mixed bag full of classic Alberta winds, a bit of rain and even some scorching sun for a change! If anyone reading this hasn't ridden out in this neck of the woods, I highly suggest that you try it. It's a fun place to ride with not a lot of traffic and some great views of the Rockies front range.

My race went O. K. with me finishing in 3rd Place in Cat. 3 in my second road race ever. I rode hard to get a good workout and had plans of winning as well but in the final sprint with 200m to go my legs had other ideas - climbing up the last hill to the finish my legs said "it's not your day dude" and turned to Jello with each pedal stroke. I held off a couple of other guys to salvage my position.

I was fortunate enough to have a sweet SCOTT CR1 TEAM bike as my weapon of choice for this mission - it was killer! It was a rocket on the climbs, light and smoothed out the rough spots in the road. I love this bike and I suggest anyone considering buying a carbon road bike check it out here at Bow Cycle.

I congratulated the other guys, grabbed some food and drinks from my guest coach Chuck Brennan from Kamloops Bike Camp who was kind enough to come out and trade in his "extreme" freeride camps and check out some "extreme spandex/lycra action" on the road racing scene. Chuck was giving me a hard time about not winning and made me motorpace behind his truck all the way back to Cochrane! It was so fast and fun! I hit the local burger joint, fueled up, collected my prizes and made my way home to my home-base in Bownesia. What a fun day. I hope that more people will read this and come out to the next race and enjoy themselves as much as I did.

See you out on the road

- Kelly
